Mom & Pop Shops…a Personal Buying Experience

I’m fairly active in the business community and receive several “blogs” from my other partners.  Here is an excellant one that I want to share with you, especially if you live in a small community in Western New York.  This piece was published by our website developer: “Quad-B”.  Enjoy…

“I was at a wedding this past weekend; little did I know I would find inspiration for this week’s blog post. At dinner, between courses, my brother politely showed off his new watch, a birthday present from his girlfriend. We “oohed and aahed” at the thin gold link band and rectangular black face accented with gold markings. Wrapped around his wrist, it looked like it was custom made with one specification: sleek.

His girlfriend told us about her watch buying experience. No, she didn’t purchase it online, or at a chain store jeweler. She bought it at a small jewelry store, part of the local community for years. She said, “It’s a mom and pop jewelry store that I love to go to.” (You gotta love word-of-mouth advertising.) She told me and everyone else at the table about the personal service she received from the owners—a married couple who take great pride in their business, their jewelry, and their relationship with their customers. All smiles, she talked of a no pressure buy, and how the owners listened to her description of the watch that would make just the right gift.

Small independent retail stores, coined “mom and pop” shops in the early 1950’s, are a part of Americana. Through the decades, we’ve lost many—way too many to big business. But, many are still the bedrock of the local business community. Like the jewelry store, they offer convenience, and the owners offer intimate knowledge of their product and services, and personal attention. Visit their store more than once and chances are they know you by name. They offer a relationship if you want it, and just polite service if you don’t.

Large retail businesses like Home Depot and Sears—and lets not forget a little success story called Walmart—have volume discounts and inventory on their side. Those are popular draws. Forget relationships, though. Heck, they have an employee standing at the exit checking your bags against the items on your receipt. Where’s the trust? And, they don’t care what your name is. Where’s the love?”

Kenwood Photography is a mom and pop shop, operated by Mike and Carol.  When you have a request for something special, we always try to fulfill your request, or tell you if we can’t do it.  Our value set is to have you be totally satisfied with the images and the digital products that we have to offer and you purchase from us.  We look forward to your requests and your comments and do our best to have you enjoy the personal buying experience at Kenwood.  And yes, after meeting you several times, I will remember your name!

Senior Portraits

It’s that time of year. I notice tassels in passing car’s rearview mirrors. The sun is warmer, the days are longer—that’s right, it’s senior portrait season again. If you want a friendly, professional experience that delivers breathtaking results, our team at Kenwood Photography is the place to go for senior portraits. Whatever your style, we can immortalize it (along with your one-of-a-kind charm) in a senior portrait that you will love now and 15 years from now. We work hard to ensure that every senior enjoys their portrait experience—from the session to the sales meeting and throughout the ordering process, right down to the finished product.

Weather Permitting

This spring has been a real trip here in Western New York and around the nation.  With summer on the way, it’s time to think “outdoors” and having your portrait reflect your personality, whether it’s in a park-like setting or in an urban “city-scape” during the day or in the evening.  Combine this with a studio session for your formals and 1 or 2 more outfits, and you will receive images that will “simply astound” your family and friends and give you that “star power” that will be so uniquely you.

This year Kenwood has expanded our session offerings and has added several types of urban settings.  You can elect to do a short walk-around Kenmore or travel to another location or in downtown Buffalo.  I’m excited to offer an early evening session to provide some unique images that will be full of attitude printed in a high contrast black and white format.  This is something new to the Western New York scene and Kenwood is offering it this year.

Call the studio and keep on checking our web site and Facebook page for more information.

New Background Sets

I had mentioned some of my travels this year going to schools, seminars and training and the results of that have been the creation of some new and exciting sets for the seniors (and adults also!).  The set creations with the combination of the different lighting patterns make some unique images that are available only from Kenwood Photography this year.  From the preliminary responses so far, it’s agreed, the images are “cool”.  Let me know what you think of them.  Have a Happy Easter.

Lighting Part 1

Kenwood Photography has been known for capturing the personality of it’s subjects using a “soft” light which really is a big “soft box”.  That style produced soft transitions between the shadows and highlights of the face, but it seems that this coming generation likes the “edgier” style of lighting versus the softer lighting in the past.  That’s why this year with the variety of photographic seminars and schools that I’ve attended, I will be going back to my “parabolic” or slightly contrasty way of lighting that I was brought up on in this business.  This style is good for single and groups of up to 5 people to really show and utilize this type of lighting.  I believe this year’s seniors will see a difference compared to previous year’s photography, besides the new sets and backgrounds that we will be using, makes me really excited to see their expressions when they view their images.  “Broadway Lighting” = making stars for stage and screen.  Lots of new things this year…more on lighting at another time.  Have a great day.
